Hyperhidrosis- A Condition Characterizing Extreme Perspiration

Our body perspires the whole day to regulate the body temperature. However, the production of perspiration beyond what is necessary to cool the body temperature is known as Hyperhidrosis. This condition is characterized by extreme sweating. Excessive perspiration can be more in the regions of face (Facial Blushing), feet (Plantar Hyperhidrosis), armpits (Axillary Hyperhidrosis), and hands (Palmar Hyperhidrosis).

Approximately 6% of the total world’s population suffers from this condition. It makes working difficult under stressful conditions. Excessive sweating may hamper your ability to work efficiently. Under nerve-racking conditions, it worsens causing embarrassment to the person. It may also result into unwanted smell and staining of clothes.

The exact cause of this condition has not been discovered yet. The nearest possible reason as expected by the experts is genetics. It may be an over activity in the sympathetic nervous system that causes excessive perspiration. To be precise, the Thoracic Sympathetic Ganglion Chain runs in the chest along the spine vertebra. It controls the eccrine and apocrine glands that are responsible for perspiration in the entire body. The eccrine glands are mostly concentrated in soles of the feet and the palms of the hand. The palms and the soles are affected mostly in maximum cases. The armpits and the face are affected to a lesser degree.
Excessive perspiration may hamper your daily activities largely. It may result because of stress, exercise, emotion, or may occur on impulse. People suffering from Palmar Hyperhidrosis find it difficult to grasp objects and consider it a social problem as well.
